An abstract painter who works in both oil and water based mediums, Lord majored in Art History at Vassar and has studied at the Art Students League in New York with Ronnie Landfield and Larry Poons. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Lord now lives in New York City.

Artist's statement:

"I love abstract painting. I love the unexpectedness of it, the way it feels like exploring uncharted territory. I love the way color leads the way in a kind of visual search. I even love the way the process can be free and spontaneous in one painting and a lengthy struggle of fits and starts in another. Both of these can work. If it is successful the painting itself seems to take over. It begins to find its own energy and personality and mood. This feels wonderful. It means the painting has found its way.

I know a painting is done when it starts seeming whole to me, yet still open. I look for this rather than any composed resolution. The final step is the the title. This can be a name, a place, a phrase - whatever strikes me at the moment. It is a kind of recognition But ultimately the real subject is visual. At the end of the day how the painting looks is what it says. " — Sally Lord
