An abstract painter who works in both oil and water based mediums, Lord majored in Art History at Vassar and has studied at the Art Students League in New York with Larry Poons. Her paintings focus on the expressive use of color in unusual formal relationships. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Lord now lives in New York City.

Artist's statement:

"To me abstract painting is exploration – an expedition into uncharted combinations of color and form. I begin a painting with a few strokes of paint choosing whatever colors that fit my mood at the moment. The choice feels random, sometimes beginning with broad strokes and sometimes simple lines. Color leads the way in a visual search, as if the painting has to be found or, more aptly, to find itself. As it develops a certain energy takes over and acts to organize and articulate the work. Without any real preplanned design the painting begins to take on its own personality and mood. Sometimes the process is smooth and immediate and sometimes it is a struggle but eventually it coalesces into a coherence that feels alive to me, and whole but still open. It is this sense of a coherent openness in each work that I look for rather than any composed resolution.

The final step is naming the painting – for a place, a feeling, perhaps something someone said. The name reflects what comes into my mind at the time and seems to fit. It is a kind of recognition. But I am not sure this is what the painting is about. To me the real subject is visual. At the end of the day how the painting looks is what it says." — Sally Lord
